Catherine Martin – threads of gold – Schmuckunikate

 

Im Rahmen der SCHMUCK 2020 präsentieren wir Ihnen in diesem Jahr die englische Schmuckkünstlerin Catherine Martin.

Catherine Martin ist unter Schmucksammlern und Galeristen weltweit ein bekannter Name – es ist jedoch das erste Mal, dass ihre Arbeiten in München zu sehen sind. Die Künstlerin zeigt und verkauft ihre Arbeiten normalerweise nur zweimal im Jahr in London. Ihre Arbeiten haben international Aufsehen erregt, man findet ihre Stücke in Museen weltweit, u.a. im Victoria & Albert Museum, London und im American Museum of Art & Design, New York.

Catherine Martin wurde 1983 als erster westlicher Student in Japan in Kumihimo ausgebildet. Kumihimo, das ist die uralte Technik des japanischen Flechtens, eine außerordentlich langwierige und präzise Art, aufwendig gemusterte Bänder aus Seide herzustellen. Wieder in England begann die Künstlerin, ebenfalls als Erste, das Flechten der Seide ins Edelmetall zu übertragen. Im Laufe der Zeit hat sie diese neue Kunst perfektioniert und immer wieder neue Kreationen geschaffen. Ihr gelingt es, hauchdünne Feingold- und Platindrähte in einer gleichförmigen, meditativen Weise zu zartem Gewebe in eleganten Mustern zu veredeln. Die renommierte Scottish Gallery schwärmte über Catherine Martins Schmuck: The resulting silken jewels are breathtaking in their sensual play of light and form.

Von 1992 bis 1994 absolvierte Martin, die ihre Karriere ursprünglich als ausgebildete Sängerin und klassische Musikerin begonnen hatte, ein Studium in der Schmuckklasse des Londoner Royal College of Art (RCA). Sie widmete sich ganz der Entwicklung ihrer neuen Technik und schloss das Studium mit einem M Phil ab. Ihre hauchdünnen, feingewebten Designs mussten jedoch noch „tragbar“ gemacht werden, z.B. durch Verschlüsse oder Broschierungen. So wurde Martin auf die Goldschmiedin Dorle Pätzold aufmerksam, die gerade ihr MA Studium am RCA aufgenommen hatte. Seitdem arbeiten Catherine Martin und Dorle Pätzold zusammen.
In den vergangenen 25 Jahren entwickelten Catherine Martin und Dorle Pätzold unzählige Stücke, vor allem Colliers, Anhänger, Broschen und Ohrschmuck auf Grundlage des Kumihimo. Der Entwurf und das Gewebe kommen von Catherine Martin, Dorle Pätzold bearbeitet die Stücke weiter und macht sie tragbar. Catherine Martin sagt über ihre Arbeit: “I like working with gold. I love the colour and sensuality but above all the timelessness … the thought of continuing a tradition of using this beautiful material which has been used for adornment for centuries. I hand braid fine gold wire which gives a particular and unique lustre that is soft and shimmers as it moves.”

Dorle Pätzold hat diese Ausstellung aufgrund ihrer Nähe zur Künstlerin und ihrer Fachkenntnis kuratiert. Catherine Martin ist zur Vernissage am 5. März ab 19:30 anwesend und hält einen Vortrag über ihre Arbeit. Hierzu laden wir Sie herzlich ein. Umrahmt wird der Abend von Ava de Araújo Madureira, Violine und Jakob Spahn, Cello mit Stücken von J.S. Bach.
