Threads of Gold
Anlässlich der Schmuckwoche 2020 zeigt die Schwabinger Galerie Scheytt die Ausstellung „Threads of Gold“ mit Arbeiten von Catherine Martin. Die Stücke der international renommierten Schmuckkünstlerin sind erstmals in München zu sehen.
1949 geboren hat sie als erste westliche Studentin in Japan eine Kumihimo-Ausbildung absolviert. Kumihimo ist eine alte japanische Flechttechnik, mit der aufwendige, gemusterte Bänder aus Seide hergestellt werden. Catherine Martin praktiziert diese Kunst, bei der höchste Präzision erforderlich ist, mit hauchdünnen Feingold- und Platindrähten. In einem meditativen Prozess entstehen zarte Gewebe und elegante Muster. Während ihres Studiums am Londoner Royal College of Art von 1992 bis 1994 widmete sich Martin ganz der Entwicklung dieser Technik.
Bei der Suche nach Verschlüssen oder Broschierungen für ihre zarten Edelmetallgewebe wurde Martin auf die junge deutsche Goldschmiedin Dorle Pätzold aufmerksam, die ebenfalls am Londoner Royal College studierte. Seitdem bilden die beiden ein Team.
In den vergangenen 25 Jahren entstanden auf Basis der Kumihimo-Technik zahlreiche phantasievolle Colliers, Anhänger, Broschen und Ohrhänger. Der Entwurf und das Gewebe kommen von Catherine Martin, Dorle Pätzold bearbeitet die Stücke weiter und macht sie tragbar.
Über ihre Arbeit mit Gold sagt Martin: „Ich liebe die Farbe und Sinnlichkeit, aber vor allem die Zeitlosigkeit … und den Gedanken, die Tradition fortzusetzen mit diesem schönen Material, das seit Jahrtausenden für Schmuck verwendet wird.“
Brigitte Scheytt, seit Jahren fasziniert von den Arbeiten Martins, bat Dorle Pätzold die Ausstellung zu kuratieren. Die Goldschmiedin ist seit Eröffnung der Galerie 2016 freischaffend für die Geschwister Scheytt tätig und ist auch mit ihren eigenen Schmuckkreationen in der Galerie Scheytt erfolgreich vertreten.
Catherine Martin ist zur Vernissage anwesend und hält einen Vortrag über ihre Arbeit.
On the occasion of Jewelry Week 2020, Gallery Scheytt in Schwabing is showing the exhibition “Threads of Gold” with works by Catherine Martin. This is the first time that pieces by the internationally renowned jewelry artist are being shown in Munich.
Born in 1949, she was the first Western student to complete kumihimo training in Japan. Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese braiding technique used to make elaborate, patterned silk cords.
Martin practices this art, which requires the utmost precision, with wafer-thin wires of fine gold and platinum. The meditative process results in delicate weaves and elegant patterns. She devoted herself entirely to the evolution of this technique while studying at the Royal College of Art in London from 1992 to 1994.
While searching for clasps or pins for her precious metal braids, Martin became aware of the young German goldsmith Dorle Pätzold, who was one of her fellow students at the Royal College of Art. The two artists have worked as a team ever since.
Numerous imaginative necklaces, pendants, brooches and earrings have been created on the basis of the kumihimo technique during the past 25 years. The design and the braid are by Catherine Martin; afterwards Dorle Pätzold further processes the pieces and makes them wearable.
Commenting on her work with gold, Marti says: “I love the color and sensuality but above all the timelessness … the thought of continuing a tradition of using this beautiful material which has been used for adornment for centuries.”
Brigitte Scheytt, who has been fascinated by Martin’s work for many years, asked Dorle Pätzold to curate the exhibition. The goldsmith has worked on a freelance basis for the Scheytt siblings since the opening of their gallery in 2016. She is also successfully represented with her own jewelry creations at Gallery Scheytt.
Catherine Martin will be present at the vernissage, where she will give a talk about on her work.
